HOW CHUCK'S KIDS
BEGAN
"It was a couple of days before Christmas in
1986, and we were visiting in a small, two-bedroom apartment where
four people lived. The mom and dad were thankful that we were making
Christmas possible for their two little kids. We left, and I told
my daughter that I had a few bucks left in the kitty - maybe we
could help this particular family with the January rent."
"We went back to the house, and my daughter spoke
with them in Spanish as they did not speak English. She told them
we would like to help them with their rent. They talked for a bit
and my daughter said, "Dad, they really appreciate the Christmas
for the kids, but the father feels that he will be able to get enough
work to make the January rent, and that we should use the money
for some family that needs it more than they do."
"Here was a family that was living in 300 square
feet, no money, not much food, no steady job, but the confidence
to turn down rent money for the next month."
"That was the moment that Chuck's Kids became
a reality."
There's a lot of work to do
because the need keeps growing.
